Dr. Martinez served as a Regents Professor of graduate-level statistical analysis at the University of New Mexico from 1986 to 2012. His illustrious career began as a teaching assistant in educational psychology within the university’s Department of Educational Foundations from 1973 to 1978. He further demonstrated his versatility and expertise in roles such as director of the reading laboratory at the University of Albuquerque and professor of mathematics, education, and psychology across various campuses.
Before embarking on his academic journey, Dr. Martinez served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968, an experience that shaped his discipline and leadership. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in English in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1980, both from the University of New Mexico. An inductee of The Phi Beta Kappa Society, Dr. Martinez’s commitment to excellence has been consistently recognized throughout his career.
Dr. Martinez’s contributions extend beyond teaching. A prolific author, he co-authored The Narrow Way Series between 2012 and 2021 and has been a contributing author to numerous publications, including Sharing Practices That Work. His editorial expertise has benefited journals like The Mathematics Teacher. . Notably, Dr. Martinez served as a media correspondent for The College Mathematics Journal.
Dr. Martinez’s impact transcends academia. As a dedicated philanthropist, he has donated to over 250 charitable organizations. His efforts have been recognized with more than 72 awards, including Merit Awards from the College of Education and a Certificate of Recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He has been featured in prominent publications, including The New Yorker, Forbes Magazine, Vanity Fair, and The Wall Street Journal.
Reflecting on his achievements, Dr. Martinez credits his success to his faith in God, the support of his late wife, Nancy, and his steadfast determination to excel. Looking forward, he aspires to publish more books and continue nurturing his intellectual curiosity.
